and they want to talk about Texas prisons.

Twice a year the TBCJ allows public comments on non-agenda items. On 8-25-23 37 people signed up to talk for the allotted three minutes.
Tona was one of them:
Tammica is the other. Her son died as a correctional officer. She addressed the TBCJ on Feb 9, 2024.
Add the escape of Gonzalo Lopez and his killing spree
Add the excessive use of long-term solitary confinement
Add 3 mental health professionals in a unit with 4,000 plus adults in custody
Add multiple other issues
What is the result? A recipe for a dysfunctional human service agency that gets too few things right.
The voices of current and formerly incarcerated adults in custody, and their families need to be heard but are not being solicited for TDCJ’s 2030 plan. Until all stakeholders are included in long range plans, prisons will continue to be dysfunctional.
